The International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts, to give it its full title, was a curious mixture. Many of the commercial and national pavilions displayed both avant-garde and more conventional design, often with an emphasis on craftsmanship and exotic materials. Two buildings were outstanding: Melnikov's Russian Pavilion, and Le Corbusier's Esprit Nouveau Pavilion. Hidden away in a less than prominent position, this `cellular living unit' was made of simple industrial materials and was completely free of decoration. Infinitely extendable, it brought the latest technology to bear on the problem of mass housing.
