The Mystery of Painting

Three masterpieces by Jan Van Eyck, are studied: The Madonna with Chancellor Rolin, The Madonna with Canon Van der Paele and The Marriage of Arnolfini. By comparing these paintings with the Italian School, contemporary Flemish and ancient Egyptian works, the film-makers try to clarify the abstract idea of `style.'

`Of especial interest is Van Eyck's use of dots (called vibration), lines (engraving) and patches (modeling) to suggest depth. Narration is excellent ... Highly recommended for its novel approach to the subject. Universities and libraries ... should certainly consider purchase.' Video Rating Guide for Libraries, USA
