How exactly were `Old Masters' produced? This series from The National Gallery, London, examines methods used in Italy before 1400 and by Rembrandt and the Impressionists, concentrating on the actual techniques of the artists. X-ray and infra-red photography have made it possible to distinguish paint layers and analyze pigments as never before; these videos not only demonstrate the techniques of painting but relate them to the kind of expressive purpose required in each case.
