This comprehensive series examines the relationship between religion, art and society: how did these elements affect each other in different parts of the continent and how were they related to the political and economic issues of the day? The viewer is swept from the Suleimaniye in Istanbul to the Escorial outside Madrid, from Strasbourg to Shropshire, from Venice and Antwerp to Fontainebleau and Rome.
