In 1959 John Arden's Serjeant Musgrave's Dance was put on at the Royal Court theatre, London. The program explores the theatrical and political background of the late 1950s by interviewing people concerned with this production and the Royal Court, intercut with archive material. John Arden explains why he wrote the play; Lindsay Anderson discusses the problems and challenges of directing it; Ian Bannen talks about how he approached the character of Serjeant Musgrave; Jocelyn Herbert describes Brecht's influence on her set designs; and Bill Gaskill explores the political and artistic ideas of the `new' writers of the 1950s who were involved with the Royal Court.
