Steinberg

Without narrative, this film takes us on an enchanting path through the American artist Saul Steinberg's witty world of characters, animals and everyday objects, teaching us along the way the delights of drawing with line. Quite close to the doodling most of us indulge in, Steinberg's technique is friendly and unforbidding, yet the artist is clever, thought-provoking and disciplined. In placing himself at the service of the graphic work, the film-maker has created a system of analogies in which lines become movement on the screen. The composer, for his part, has adapted to a similar discipline which is just as strict. From the point of view of production, the film has been conceived as a long journey through the drawings, which are juxtaposed as if in an immense fresco.

`The director has made use of all the resources at the disposal of the cinema to communicate a form of dynamic humor.' UNESCO
