Francis Bacon

Francis Bacon was one of the world's greatest post-war artists. From 1944, when he made his first triptych Studies for Three Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion, Bacon painted more than twenty major triptychs which form the core of his work. This video was shot at the Tate Gallery's major exhibition of Bacon's work and focuses on the thirty-six panels that make up twelve of the major works. The images are illuminated by a sound track which is based on an interview given by Bacon himself. Artists often find it difficult to discuss their work, but here Bacon talks about his paintings with great clarity. He explores the themes of morality, realism and sexuality that have always preoccupied him. The result gives an insight into the pictures, the way they are made and the way Bacon saw them.

'Invaluable ... the expertly detailed visual analysis of the imagery leaves the viewer with the uncomfortable but exhilarating sense that Bacon's macabre oeuvre has been left to percolate under one's own skin. The feeling is transcending ... a must-see for serious art students and a compelling experience for the neophyte'. Video Rating Guide for Libraries, USA
