R M Schindler: The Lovell Beach House

In the mid- and late twenties two houses were built for the same patron, Dr Philip Lovell of Los Angeles, by two different Austrian architects who had each emigrated to America and spent time working as assistants to Frank Lloyd Wright. The Beach House at Newport Beach, south of Los Angeles, was designed by Rudolf Schindler, and incorporated several devices for healthy living specially requested by Dr Lovell. The other building is the Health House near Hollywood, designed by Richard Neutra; and the work of both men can be seen as closer to the emergent `International Style' than to that of Wright, their ex-teacher.
