Book Art in the Making: Rembrandt
The National Gallery's Rembrandts have a remarkable chronological spread, representing most of his major concerns and preoccupations as a mature painter. This book describes Rembrandt's technical procedures - how he prepared his canvases and panels, first laid in the composition, made alterations on the canvas, and so on - which enables the authors to make a major contribution to the controversial issue of establishing an authentic Rembrandt oeuvre. The book presents an account of the subject matter of each painting and fully illustrated technical analyses. There is also a chronology of Rembrandt's life and important works; essays on training and studio practice in the Netherlands, and on Rembrandt's painting materials and techniques; a survey of his paint medium; a glossary and an extensive bibliography.
