Evidence of Our Lives

Evidence of Our Lives shows how children can develop skills by recording, researching and interpreting their local environment. The preparations for the building of a new reservoir in the Roadford Valley in Devon, England, provide an ideal opportunity for children to work alongside archaeologists in their study of the history of a valley. Firstly a modern, furnished house is explored for the evidence it offers of the way of life of its present-day inhabitants, contrasting this from an archaeologist's viewpoint with earlier dwellings. Then we see the children working in the valley to gather what evidence they can find there. We discover that interpreting evidence is a skill that requires constant revision as further evidence comes to light, but that with careful work we can begin to draw a realistic picture of the past.
