Two great sixteenth-century cities contrasted: one a booming commercial center, the other an ancient European power. Between 1496 and 1538, a major change of attitude towards public building and public spaces took place in Venice, and this led to the development of the area around the Piazza San Marco and the Rialto. Antwerp, on the other hand, simply exploded outwards from its medieval core, the Grote Markt and the cathedral. Both cities were extremely rich; both reached a peak of prosperity and then declined - one through Spanish conquest, the other through exhausting wars and the new trade with the Americas.
